Mike Makes His Move was the 24th and final episode of the fifth season and the 109th overall episode of All In The Family. It first aired on CBS-TV on March 8, 1975. Written by Lou Derman and Bill Davenport from an original story by Derman and Davenport, with Robert Arnott, it was directed by H. Wesley Kenney.
Mike has graduated and he and Gloria are desperately searching for an apartment to get away from Archie, who is as anxious for them to move out as they are to do so. They have little luck until they are offered a house with "five rooms, carpets and drapes and a-hundred-and-sixty-five a month": The Jeffersons' former house next-door to Archie and Edith.
All of Mike's hard work pays off as he accepts a position as an associate professor, which is good news to Archie, because it means that he and Gloria are finally getting out from under his roof. The problem is, that finding a new home is tougher than any of them thought - even though Archie helpfully suggests that they move to Jersey, which is three hours away.
George Jefferson gets wind of their problem and hatches a scheme to rent Mike and Gloria their old house right next door to Archie at a bargain basement price, just to have the satisfaction of the arrangement getting under Archie's skin. Mike and Gloria don't tell her parents about the agreement because Mike doesn't want to be living next door even when George keeps dropping the price of the rent. That night, the family gathers for a party celebrating Archie and Edith paying off the mortgage and burning the notice. Archie gets wind of the information that Mike is turning down a great deal but doesn't know that it is next door.
