Mike and Gloria Meet was the 12th episode of Season 8 of All in the Family, the 169th overall episode in the series. Written by Bob Weiskopf and Bob Schiller, the episode, which was directed by Paul Bogart, originally aired on CBS-TV on December 11, 1977.

Synopsis[]
The Bunkers and Stivics remember the first time the "Little Goil" and the "Meathead" met.
Storyline[]
Gloria gets a letter from her friend Debbie Ballantine announcing the birth of her sixth child. Mike doesn't remember her, but Gloria reminds him that she was the one who introduced them nine years ago, as Debbie was responsible for arranging a blind date between the two. Gloria then recounts the story of what happened that night, when Archie and Edith left her home alone to visit Edith's Aunt Iola.
Gloria was young and virginal, with her blonde "Shirley Temple" curled hair, while Mike was a scruffy hippie who blew off a chance to protest at the Nixon inauguration. Initially they find that they hate each other, but as they begin to talk they find that they both enjoy the older style of dancing. The dance leads to a kiss, then the kiss leads to a second date. The rest, as they say, is history.
Did You Know?[]
- A loud fan in the live audience can be heard several times during the show. In one scene, she says "Oh no" right before Mike and Gloria kiss for the first time. Her comment gets a laugh from the audience.
- This was the first time that Rob Reiner and Christopher Guest worked together. Reiner would go on to act with and/or direct Guest in a number of future films including: This Is Spinal Tap (1984), The Princess Bride (1987) and A Few Good Men (1992).
- This episode's flashback shows the Bunker home nine years in the past, which shows a wing-back chair that is different than Archie's classic chair. While it is possible that Archie had more than one chair in the house it was established in the Season 7 episode "Archie's Chair" (#17) that he had been using his regular chair "for the past 28 years" in his "glory room" and had turned down an offer of $400 based on the sentimental value of it.

- In the flashback scenes, the living room has the same wallpaper that was installed during season seven, and the same bird calendar from the "present day" is hanging in the kitchen.
- Archie's famous chair is conspicuously absent in the flashback scenes, which according to the previous "Archie's Chair" episode, had resided in the house when Gloria was a baby.
